Trengove returns for Road Running Championships
Published Fri 15 Sep 2017
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jess Trengove (SA) will return to the familiar roads of Adelaide to run in the 2017 Australian Road Running Championships as a part of the Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run this weekend.
Thousands of runners are expected to run the 12km course which begins on King William Road and finishes at Glenelg Beach.
Fresh off a ninth-place performance in the marathon at the IAAF World Championships in London, Trengove was in ripping form, stopping the clock at 2:28:59, which was both the fastest ever by an Australian woman at the world titles and the best-ever Australian female placing at the championships.
Putting the performance into perspective, Trengove joined Rob de Castella and Steve Moneghetti as one of only three green and gold athletes to finish among the top-ten at the IAAF World Championships.
Now, Trengove returns to Adelaide in an attempt to capture her first Australian road running title.
“I wasn’t necessarily intending to be back into things following the London world championships so quickly, but my body seemed to have recovered well and I’m feeling motivated,†Trengove said.
“I absolutely love the City-Bay event so I thought I can’t bear to be involved as a supporter or in the car – I really want to be out there racing!â€
The race will mark Trengove’s first competition since
“I‘ve come back with more confidence in what I can achieve in training in the marathon and in racing over different distances,†Trengove said.
“I’m excited about the year ahead and the lead up
Trengove, who was recently named as an official ambassador for the Pacific School Games that will be held in Adelaide in December, has always received strong encouragement when racing at home.
“I’ve always been really grateful
“It’s nice to be involved in such an iconic local event and be out there running with the locals and be mingling with them at the finish line.â€
“It’s certainly an enjoyable day with my group, Team Tempo, who’ll be out in force on Sunday.â€
But Trengove will face fierce competition on her home deck, as she’ll line up against fellow world championships representative Madeline Hills (NSW).
Hills took the silver medal at last year’s Road Running Championships in 40:21 behind Eloise Wellings (39:05). Hills also took the silver medal behind Wellings at the 2014 championships in Sydney.
Other starters include three-time Olympian, London world championships representative and Australia’s All-time fifth fastest 3000m
2016 Rio Olympian and world championships finalist (5000m) Brett Robinson (Vic) will be among the starters in the men’s race, as he’ll attempt to win back-to-back titles in his first run back following a serious injury that sidelined the 26-year-old for four months.
He’ll come up against the best placed Australian in the marathon at the recent world championships Jack Colreavy (NSW) who came 45th with 2:21:44. Colreavy made major gains in 2017 when he ran 2:18:32 for the Lake Biwa Marathon, Japan, and secured his spot in his first world championships team.
Colreavy finished 4th in a sprint finish for silver at last year’s Road Running Championships.
2017 Australian Cross Country Champion Andrew Buchanan (Vic) will also take to the road and aim to better his 2015 attempt that saw him place 6th in 30:03.
Registrations are still open for the City-Bay but you must be quick – they close at
This weekend will also see the Australian Marathon Championships take place as a part of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
Athletes of all abilities will take part in the 42.195km race that takes in the world-famous sights of the Sydney Opera House, Centennial Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens and over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
