Peter Bromley appointed Interim CEO of Athletics Australia

Published Thu 18 Mar 2021

The Board of Athletics Australia is pleased to announce that Peter Bromley has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive, following the departure of current CEO Darren Gocher next month.

Bromley will work with the Board and Member Associations to help drive the sport in the lead up to the Tokyo Games and the OneAthletics merger, as Athletics Australia and Coles Little Athletics Australia seek to form a new National Sporting Organisation under the banner of ‘Australian Athletics’.

Currently in the role of General Manager – RunWest Festival, Bromley has extensive experience as an Executive General Manager and Director across a broad range of industries including banking, data and real estate.

Prior to his role at RunWest Festival, he held the roles of Executive General Manager – Small, Medium Enterprise Segments, and Executive General Manager (Country Manager NZ) – Sales & Marketing at CoreLogic, where he was responsible for commercial outcomes and overall leadership.

Importantly, he has also had lifelong involvement in athletics as both an athlete and administrator. A former NSW champion in the 1500m, Bromley was President of Athletics NSW for four years, and held a position on the Athletics Australia Board for nine years.

Athletics Australia President Mark Arbib said Bromley’s appointment was an exciting and positive step as the Australian athletics community move towards the unification of the sport.

“We are extremely excited to have Peter joining us as Interim CEO,” said Arbib.

“Peter’s deep experience and knowledge of our organisation prepares him perfectly to fill the Chief Executive’s position. The Board looks forward to working with Peter as we continue to prepare for the Tokyo Games and undertake the merger process with Coles Little Athletics Australia.

“Peter will work closely with OneAthletics CEO Kate Palmer on the future of the sport and the creation of Australian Athletics.”

Bromley said he was thrilled to be leading Athletics Australia into its next phase.

“I am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead the sport at this exciting time of opportunity and change,” Bromley said.

“As someone that has athletics running through his veins, I understand the power that the sport can have on our nation, and it is with this passion that I look forward to working with all of the stakeholders in the sport to continue positive progress.”

Bromley will work with current CEO Darren Gocher until the end of the 2021 Australian Track and Field Championships to ensure a smooth transition, and will ensure the core areas of High Performance, Competition, Coaching and Commercial are delivered, while working with the Member Associations to progress the OneAthletics objectives.

Athletics Australia Vice President Jan Swinhoe thanked Gocher for his work in progressing the sport since commencing in his role in 2017.

“On behalf of the Board and the entire Australian athletics community, I’d like to thank Darren for his great contribution to our sport.

“Darren’s leadership has placed Athletics Australia in a strong financial position and placed for success in Tokyo this July and August, and there’s no doubt he has taken athletics to a new level in his time with us. We are grateful that he has stayed on over this period of change as AA moves forward towards the OneAthletics merger, now to be led by Peter.”

Bromley will transition into the role full time on Monday, April 19.
