Pearson and Mitchell back on international scene

Published Wed 05 Jul 2017

Morgan Mitchell (Vic) and Sally Pearson (Qld) have returned to the tracks of Europe in Székesfehérvár (HUN) earlier today as they continue their preparations for the IAAF World Championships.

Competing in the women’s one-lap race at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial, Mitchell, who is the Australian champion, ran 52.37 to cross the line sixth behind Shaunae Miller (BAH). Miller’s time of 49.86 was a meet record.

Mitchell is set to continue her build-up for competition at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with competition in Sotteville (FRA) this weekend, before two further races ahead of the Team Australia Preparation Camp later this month.

Stopping the clock in 12.76 (w: +0.1), Pearson also placed sixth in a 100m hurdles raced staked with American speedsters. Leading the way was Kendra Harrison (USA), the victor in a time of 12.28, just 0.08 outside her world record.

Not to be outdone in the men’s 800m was Joseph Deng (Vic), with the training partner of Rio 2016 Olympian, Peter Bol, stopping the clock in a new personal best time of 1:47.06.

Competing in the women’s 100m hurdles ‘B’ Race, Michelle Jenneke (NSW) ran 13.23 (w: +1.1), while Brooke Stratton (Vic) soared 6.55m (w: -0.2) in the women’s long jump ahead of further competition at the IAAF Diamond League in London (GBR) this Sunday 9 July. Naa Anang had a best jump of 6.13m from her three attempts only a few days after setting a personal best of 6.68m.

After a world championships qualifying leap in the long jump this past weekend, Henry Frayne (Qld) chose not to start at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial.

Attention now turns to the IAAF Diamond League in Lausanne (SUI) this Thursday, with Kathryn Mitchell (Vic, javelin), Linden Hall (Vic, mile), Jenny Blundell (NSW, mile) and Kurtis Marschall (SA, pole vault) set to compete.
