Liz Clay Announced as 2020 Gary Knoke Scholarship Recipient

100m hurdler Liz Clay has today been awarded the Gary Knoke Memorial Scholarship by the Special Awards Committee of Athletics Australia.

The Gary Knoke Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1986 to honour the memory of the late Gary Knoke, the AIS’s first track and field coach and one of Australia’s finest track and field athletes, representing his country at three Olympic and four Commonwealth Games in the 400m hurdles.

Gold-Coast-based Clay, 24, recorded the fourth fastest women’s 100m hurdles time (12.94) in Australian history at the 2020 Melbourne Track Classic and was honoured to receive the scholarship.

“I’m incredibly grateful to be the recipient of this prestigious scholarship and want to extend my thanks to the Knoke family and to Athletics Australia for this honour. I’ll be sure to continue to honour Gary Knoke’s memory in competition this Summer,” said Clay.

The aim of the annual Gary Knoke Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support for a young sprinter or hurdler to help achieve their athletic potential.

“Our family is thrilled to be able to support Liz Clay through this scholarship and we look forward to following and supporting Liz’s career closely,” said Ashley Knoke, son of the late Gary Knoke.

More than sixty applications were received for the 2020 Gary Knoke Scholarship.

“The Athletics Australia Special Awards Committee would like to thank every athlete who applied for this year’s scholarship. The applications were of a high quality and we are thrilled to be able to support Liz in her career advancement through this year’s scholarship,” said Anne Lord, Chair of the Special Awards Committee.
