Crombie and Holt chasing their own world records

Published Thu 05 Apr 2018

Day 1 action at the Games saw the scoreboards flash with "World Record", first at the Aquatic Centre when Shayna Jack, Bronte Campbell, Emma Mckeon and Cate Campbell combined for record-shattering all-time best of 3.30.05 in the women's 4 x 100m freestyle, then at the Anna Meares Velodrome the men's 4000m pursuit team of Alex Porter, Sam Welsford, Leigh Howard and Jordan Kerby surprised with new world marks of their own with 3:49.804.

Two stars of the Athletics team could do their own record double next Wednesday when Isis Holt and Cam Crombie are set to shine at Carrara Stadium.

Towering shot putter Cameron Crombie (AUS) believes he is capable of achieving a world record in front of a big home crowd at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 1.97m Crombie has an F38 classification record 15.95m on his honour roll, as well as a world title from the London 2017 World Para Athletics Championships.

"If I can nail my processes down, it (another personal best) shouldn’t be an issue," said Crombie, who is a real estate agent and volunteer firefighter, and is coached by fellow Australian and six-time Paralympic shot putter Hamish MacDonald.

"Any throw with 16 (metres) on it will be a good starting point."

Also aiming high is 16-year-old Isis Holt.

The teen sensation in the T35 100m event has a world record of 13.36 seconds and also won a world title in London.

"Since nationals, I’ve been working hard getting the little things right," said Holt, who has been given the nickname ‘Lightning Holt Bolt’ (after her idol Usain Bolt) by team co-captain Kurt Fearnley.

"The main focus has been my block starts and drive phase – if I execute the first half of the race well, it sets up everything else to fall into place."

Holt is full of confidence leading into GC2018, after joining Crombie and teammates at an Australian camp at Nudgee in Brisbane.

“When you get your uniform and join the team, it all starts to get very real and exciting," she said.
