The Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne has officially sold out, marking the first one-day athletics meet in Australia to do so since the 2001 IAAF Grand Prix, and cementing the sport’s growing appeal as a dynamic and in-demand entertainment product.
Set to take place at Lakeside Stadium and part Chemist Warehouse Summer Series, the meet will welcome a capacity crowd of 10,000. Spectators will be treated to a showcase of world class talent, headlined by some of the biggest names in global and Australian Athletics – including Australia’s teenage phenom Gout Gout, whose performances have captivated audiences both at home and abroad.
The sell-out crowd signals a powerful resurgence for Australian athletics, building on momentum of the country’s most successful Olympic Games campaign since 1956 and a record-breaking medal haul at the World Athletics Indoor Championships over the weekend.
Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said the progress reflects the resurgence of the athletics in what is a golden period for the sport.
“The Maurie Plant Meet has captured the public’s imagination. To sell out a one-day athletics meet in Australia for the first time in over two decades is exciting — not just for the event, but for the athletes and the sport overall,” Hollingsworth said.
“Athletics is back in a big way. We’re seeing the rise of young stars like Gout Gout go global, we’re edging close to a group of athletes running sub-10-seconds in the blue ribband 100m event and medal hauls at the Olympics and almost every World Athletics global event. Athletics has become an entertainment product once more and fans are responding.”
A World Athletics Continental Tour Gold level meet, the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne is the only meet of this level within the Oceania region, sitting just below the Diamond League in status on the global athletics calendar.
The meet showcases the very best of Australian athletics while offering fans a rare opportunity to witness international champions in a world-class, fast-paced format designed for both athletics purists and new fans alike.
With the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne now sold out, tickets are now only available in limited capacity via resale on the official INTIX platform. Tickets will not be available to purchase at the gate.
The meet will also be broadcast live and free on Channel 7 and 7plus, thanks to our valued broadcast partner, Seven.
The Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne is proudly supported by the Victorian Government through its Significant Sporting Events Program.
