An open letter on the eve of Olympic and Paralympic selection
Published Thu 27 Jun 2024
As we approach the final days of Olympic and Paralympic qualification, a time brimming with anticipation and tension for all involved, I urge the Australian athletics community to uphold values of understanding, kindness, and consideration that embody our beloved sport.
The depth of talent in Australian athletics this year is truly remarkable. Yet, with more qualified athletes across a spectrum of events than available spots, the task of nominating for the Olympics and Paralympics is immensely complex and challenging.
The decisions made by Athletics Australia's independent selectors are not easy — they are often subject to debate. Nevertheless, it's imperative that we approach this process with respect and empathy, for the selected athletes, those that miss out and for the integrity of our sport.
Our selectors bring enormous athletics experience, some having been Olympic athletes themselves, and a deep understanding of the nuances of the sport and the selection policies approved by the Board of Athletics Australia. They consider a multitude of factors in their decisions, with access to information that others may not have. We wholeheartedly respect and support their efforts, recognising their voluntary commitment and trust in their ability to assemble our most competitive teams.
It is crucial to note that for our Paralympic nominations there are also separate ceiling quotas on the number of male and female athletes that can be included in the final team, adding another layer of complexity to the selection process.
In the coming days and weeks, let us remember that this can be an emotional and incredibly difficult time for athletes who miss out on selection, their coaches, families and supporters. Every contender has invested immense effort and sacrifice into their journey. Criticism directed at Athletics Australia or individual athletes does not serve our community well; instead, let us focus on celebrating those who achieve their dream of Olympic and Paralympic selection.
We eagerly anticipate watching our strongest Olympic and Paralympic teams compete in Paris. This is a thrilling moment for the entire athletics community and especially for our athletes who are tirelessly pursuing their dreams.
It is a privilege to be part of their journeys. Let’s enjoy the coming months, as we support our Olympic and Paralympic teams every step of the way whether they run, jump, throw, walk or roll towards their goals.
