2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships | Western Australians To Watch

Published Wed 06 Dec 2023

With a home ground advantage, pride is on the line this week for Team WA at the 2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships. Hungry to claim the coveted State Team Trophy, this team is poised to make these Championships their stepping stone for greatness.

Names to remember ahead of this weekend:

Amelia Rowe
U18 200m

Despite being a relative newcomer to the spotlight, Amelia Rowe has made a resounding entry into the Western Australian athletics scene. The sprinting extraordinaire has had a stellar opening this season, with a sensational dip on the line to beat hometown favourite and U17 All Schools Champion Olivia Dodds in the Under 18 200m - just a week after the in-form second-place getter broke the state record. Rowe's eagerness sets the stage for an intense rivalry and this race will be a must-watch for spectators in the stands and at home alike.

Emilia Reed
U14 200m and 200m

Emilia is a force to be reckoned with, having blitzed the sprint double at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Brisbane in April. She's back to win more gold, and having broken the U14 State 200m record once again with a 12.54 performance at the WA All Schools Championships, she has solidifed her status as a rising star in sprinting and one to watch in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Games.

Danielle Graham
U18 1500m

In the middle distance realm, Danielle Graham's remarkable feat of running up an age group and clinching the U18 1500m title at the Australian Junior Championships in Brisbane is a testament to her prowess on the track. Her tenacity and strategic ability makes her a contender to watch closely.

Josiah John
U17 100m and 200m

A semi-finalist at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Josiah John has been in exceptional form, clocking times as swift as 10.43 and 21.75 just last week. His consistency throughout last season, and his grit mark him as a potent force in the sprint double as he aims to show off his potential to selectors for the World Under 20 Championships.

Olivia Dodds
U18 100m and 200m

She harvested two gold medals at the last iteration of the Australian All Schools Championships and now Olivia Dodds is back for more as she looks to lock in the title of "Australia's Fastest Schoolgirl." Aiming for a spot on the team for the World Under 20 Championships, she will lace up her spikes knowing she is in career best form, having recently broken the WA State U18 200m record, when powering around the bend in 23.84 (+1.4).

Sophie Williams
U15 200m, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Javelin Throw

One of the state's most versatile athletes, Sophie Williams favours the heptathlon but will be putting on a show in four of her favourite events - the 200m, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Javelin Throw. She has consistently impressed over the last season, and claimed an astounding five gold medals in a competition in Singapore in July. Regardless of how she fares against specialists in each event, Sophie has proved time and time again she is an athlete on the rise and a name to remember as she climbs the ranks of Australian athletics.

Travis Deane
U14 100m, 200m and 400m

Making history as Athletics Australia's first-ever U13 track medallist at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Brisbane, it comes as no surprise that Travis Deane has been a dominating force on the track in Perth.  Although he stamped his authority on the middle distance events of 800 and 1500m, the teenage sensation will be looking to grab gold in the sprint treble in the Under 14 ranks.

Wyatt Hill
U15 200m Hurdles and Javelin Throw

Excelling in the decathlon over the past few summers, Wyatt Hill has showcased immense promise as a star in the making, and claimed a national Under 15 Heptathlon title earlier this year. His dedication and versatility make him a formidable contender in both the 200m hurdles and javelin - two very different events. He most recently placed second in the U16 Javelin at the WA All Schools Championships throwing 46.76m, and ran 29.33 over the sticks to solidify his position on the team.

The 2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships, supported by WA Tourism, is a three-day event that sees Australia’s best school-aged athletes compete in team-based competition. Tickets can be purchased here.
