Adams claims City2Sea honours again

Olympic marathon representative, Liam Adams sprinted to the win at the City2Sea event in St Kilda, Melbourne on Sunday.

The 31-year-old stormed across the finish line after 15kms in a time of 44:08, just ahead of Dejen Gebreselassie who had set the pace for much of the race. It was Adams second win in three years.

"I wanted to make it a hard race with a fast time," said Gebreselassie. "But Liam [Adams] is really strong. He's an Olympian runner. I have a lot of respect for him.

"He helped me out as well. He was right on my toes. It was good to have. I'm happy. It was a tough race."

Adams said Gebreselassie pushed him all the way, having struggled with hayfever despite the unusually still conditions around Albert Park Lake.

"I didn't feel that good out there from my hay fever… This year, I don't remember it being as bad as it was. But it's all right. It's great to get the win out.”

Forty-nine-year-old Julie Norney (56:56) was the first woman across the line, with 36 seconds back to her nearest rival, Erchana Murray-Bartlett.

"It was a good opportunity for me as I haven't been running and it was a bit of a kickstart," Norney said.

"You never know as the wheels can fall off and the girls are coming right behind you. So, it was a huge surprise, a very pleasant surprise."

More than 8000 competitors took part in the annual event, which raised over $240,000 for charity.

Meanwhile, at the Athletics NSW 3000m Championships in Sydney, Milly Clarke slashed nine seconds off her PB to claim the win and the state title in 9:08.33. In a remarkable performance, 12-year-old Imogen Stewart was 7th in a time of 9:19.42 - an astonishing 24 seconds faster than the world-best mark for 12-year-olds. In the men's race, Jordan Gusman set a time of 7:52.82 to take the win ahead of clubmate Bryce Anderson in 8:03.41.

Back in Victoria, the State Relay Championships were highlighted by a dead heat between Doncaster and Old Melbournians in the Men's Open 4x100m final. To read more, watch the video and see the full results, click here. 

In international results, Australia's Sinead Diver finished seventh (2:33:00) in the Saitama Marathon in Japan, won by Kenyan Flomena Cheyech Daniel in 2:28:39.
