Three Days of Impressive Results from our Para-Athletes in Switzerland

Published Tue 04 Jun 2019

Australia’s best para athletes have completed 3 days of elite competition in Switzerland, claiming a multitude of impressive placings, qualifications and records.

The terrific form of our wheelchair athletes began at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial Meet, on the quick Arbon track. Eliza Ault-Connell was again the star, breaking two Australian records at the one day meet. She lowered her own Australian T54 400m record she set a few days ago, clocking 53.24 seconds. Then she claimed her fourth Australian record in a week breaking her own national T54 100m record with 16.21.

In the T53 400m five-time Paralympian Angie Ballard was also very quick clocking 54.55, quicker than she pushed to break the world record a few years ago. Angie won the 100m 16.50 (just outside her Australian record of 16.44) and then placed second to Madi de Rozario in the T53 800m. They recorded quick times of 1:46.80 and 1:48.42. There were also twin wins for Rosemary Little in the T33 100m and 400m, while Rheed McCracken claimed the T34 100m.

Our Australian contingent then backed up to take on two days of competition at the 2019 Swiss Nationals

The rivalry between Tunsia’s Walid Ktila and Australia’s Rheed McCracken continued in Arbon on day one of the Swiss Nationals. The competition between the great athletes in the T34 100m resulted in a world record and Australian record. Ktila smashed his own world mark recording 14.46, while two-time Paralympic medallist in this event Rheed McCracken trimmed his own national record clocking 14.79.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jake Lappin, competing in the T54 1500m dipped under three minutes clocking 2:58.88. There was a very promising performance in the same race by 18-year-old Victorian Sam Rizzo who under the coaching of Richard Coleman clocked 3:02.06.

The winning form of Sydney’s Rosemary Little continued in Arbon, as she claimed the T33 100m (22.45) and 400m (1:17.66).

The second day of the Swiss Nationals saw more Australian records, with Sam Carter in the T54 200m bettering his national record set last January at the SDU series by clocking 24.51 seconds.

Eliza Ault-Connell capped a magnificent week with another Australian record. Competing in the T54 800m Eliza clocked 1:42.35 – over two seconds quicker than the national record she set earlier in the week. In the race she placed third to Manuela Schär (SUI) who broke the world record and Tatyana McFadden (USA) who set an American record. Eliza’s time was also under the old world record.

Rosemary Little won the T33 200m and 800m taking her gold medal haul to four at this meet.
