Published Mon 06 Feb 2017

A green and gold contingent of 24 will battle it out at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships on 26 March 2017.

Confirmed by Athletics Australia Selectors today, the team is led by Brett Robinson (Vic) and Anna Kelly (Vic) after the duo won the Selection Trial in Canberra (ACT) last month.

Robinson and Kelly are joined on the automatically selected list by Stewart McSweyn (Tas), Jack Rayner (Vic), Emily Ryan (ACT) and Gemma Maini (Vic), with the men’s and women’s teams of six rounded out by Sam McEntee (WA), Liam Adams (Vic), Patrick Tiernan (Qld), Bridey Delaney (NSW), Lexy Gilmour (NSW) and Virginia Moloney (Vic).

McEntee narrowly missed a top-three place at the Selection Trial and made his Olympic debut in Rio, while Adams is a two-time medallists at the World Student Cross Country Championships. Tiernan has been selected after his stunning victory at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Delaney won the Australian 10,000m Championship to close out her 2016 campaign and come into contention for selection, while Gilmour and Moloney both placed among the top-six at the Selection Trial. Moloney is the current Australian cross-country champion.

The selected teams for the boy’s and girl’s races capture the best placed finishers at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Selection Trial.

Hosted biennially, Australia has competed at every instalment of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, with Benita Willis (Qld) winning individual gold at the event.

At the Guiyang 2015 instalment of the event, Robinson delivered the best Australian performance, crossing 28th in the men’s 12-kilometre event.
