2025 Australian Summer of Athletics | Victory tour set to showcase nation’s best

Published Fri 04 Oct 2024

The stars of Australian athletics are set for a triumphant return to home soil as they gear up for the 2025 Australian Summer of Athletics – a season that promises to celebrate the country’s extraordinary success at Paris 2024 and the World Under 20 Championships in Lima.

The calendar, confirmed by Athletics Australia today, includes a number of championship events, four major meets across the country as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, as well as stops on the World Athletics Race Walking Tour. The season will culminate with the Australian Athletics Championships, giving fans the opportunity to witness the country’s finest athletes in action after their remarkable international success.

The season will begin in the host city of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the next generation of athletes launching their careers at the Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Championships in Brisbane, before our middle-distance talent take their marks at the On Track Nights Zatopek:10 in Melbourne for the 10,000m Championships.

Off the back of two Olympic medals in Paris in race walking, Australia’s top talent will take to the track and roads at the Australian 35km Race Walking Championships in December, the prestigious Supernova: World Athletics Race Walking Tour in Canberra and the 20km Race Walking Championships in Adelaide in February.

With four meets as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, athletes will be able to compete for crucial world ranking points ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September 2025. With stops scheduled in Adelaide, Sydney, Perth as well as Brisbane for a throwers-only competition, and ending with Oceania’s only Gold level meet, the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne. Para athletes will similarly be on show across the meet series each meets, while the Summer Down Under wheelchair series continues in Canberra.

The crown jewel of the season, the Australian Athletics Championships, will see the best of the sport go west again, with nine days of action at WA Athletics Stadium as the country’s open and junior athletes come together for a true celebration of the sport involving thousands of athletes and fans.

Athletics Australia CEO Simon Hollingsworth shared his excitement, highlighting the significance of the 2025 season for both athletes and fans alike.

“We are incredibly proud to bring the Australian Summer of Athletics to communities across the country once again, especially off the back of such a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games and of course the record-breaking World Under 20 Championships,” Hollingsworth said.

“The 2025 season will be more than just high quality competition – it will be a celebration of achievement, perseverance and national pride. This is an opportunity for Australians to cheer on their heroes from Paris at their homecoming and witness the next generation of stars as they set their eyes on glory and continue the momentum from Paris and Peru.

“The World Athletics Continental Tour is a cornerstone of our season and it will be fantastic to see the continuation of it with four meets across the country. The growth of the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne over the last two years in particular shows how important these events are for athletes and the community, and we can’t wait to see the stands packed with fans as our athletes take centre stage.”

More announcements will be made in the coming weeks and months regarding the season, including the naming rights partner for the season and the release of the event grid.
