2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Championships | Tasmanians To Watch

Published Wed 08 Nov 2023

Excitement is building as we approach the 2023 edition of the Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships, set to take place in Perth in just one month's time.

The pinnacle event for school-aged stúdents, the event has produced and unearthed some of the country's top talent and this year is looking to be no exception.

Among the sea of talented athletes from across the nation, Tasmania proudly presents a formidable line up of young stars poised to make their mark in Perth.

Check out some of their top-tier talent below.

Arielle Cannell
Under 16 and Under 18 Hammer Throw

A rising star from Mt Carmel College, Arielle is no strange to the sptolight. Securing gold in the Under 15 Hammer Throw and an impressive bronze in the Under 18 age group last year, the Eastern Suburbs Athletic Club thrower will step onto WA Athletics Stadium with confidence.

At the Tasmanian All Schools Championships this year, she achieved an astonishing throw of 62.55m, setting a new State record in her age group with an added 2.5 metres to her previous record. The throw earned her the title of Athlete of the Meet, alongside Jacob Gardner.

Jacob Gardner
Under 18 2000m Steeplechase

Representing Hobart College and the University of Tasmania Athletics Club,  Jacob Gardner is in the form of his life. The silver medallist in the 2000m Steeplechase at last year's Championships in Adelaide, Jacob is determined to clinch the top spot.

Having recently shattered a record that has stood since November 1986, Jacob crossed the finish line first in the Under 18 Men's 2000m Steeplechase at the Tasmanian All Schools Championships in 5:51.52, marking him as one to watch.

Chelsea Scolyer
Under 18 100m

She may only be 17, but Marist Regional College's Chelsea Scolyer is a force to be reckoned with. The rising sprints star is already the reigning Women's Open 100m in Tasmania and her personal best of 11.71 would have secured her the silver medal at either of the past two editions of the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships.

Having missed out on all national events this year due to injury, Chelsea's hunger makes her a formidable opponent in Perth.

Samuel Lindsay
Under 17 3000m Racewalk

Last time we saw Samuel Lindsay on the national scene, he had swept up at the 100th edition of the Australian Athletics Championships claiming silver in the Under 17 3000m Race Walk and won bronze with a huge personal best of 21:40 in the Under 18 5000m the following day.

Eager to do his state proud, Samuel Lindsay will look to make it three from three at the national level in 2023 as he gears up for an exciting 2024 Summer Season.

Ashley Fehlberg
Under 16 800m and 1500m

Marist Regional College student Ashley Felhberg has made a splash since taking up athletics only a year and a half ago. At 15 years-old, the middle distance runner from Burniemade her name known when placing sixth in the U16 800m event at the Australian Athletics Championships, and is on track to continue climbing the ranks in Perth.

Clocking times of 2:15.05 and 4:40.77 in the 800m and 1500m respectively, Ashley dominated the Tasmanian All Schools Championships, walking away with two gold medals and defeating favourite, multiple-time national age champion Violet Owen.
