Published Wed 22 Nov 2023

The future stars of the Queensland track and field scene are getting ready to set WA Athletics Stadium ablaze at the 2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships. With an impressive line-up of talent across the State, these athletes are geared up to make a mark and leave a trail of records in their wake.

Get to know some of the stars of Team Queensland below.

Tate Van Camp
U14 400m, 800m and 1500m

13-year-old Tate Van Camp etched his name into the record books when becoming the fastest boy in history to win the Under 14 800m at an Australian Championships, shattering the two-minute barrier, and is now eyeing victory across three events. As the Queensland record holder in the U14 1500m, the Brisbane State High student clinched gold in both the U14 800m and 1500m in April, but will be adding a third distance to his repertoire in the 400m, and will be aiming to rewrite history once again.

Lachlan Buckman
U18 Javelin

Reigning U17 All Schools javelin champion Lachlan Buckman will bring his precision and expertise to the field in Perth, and looking to add another gold medal to his collection. After finishing in second place at the 100th edition of the Australian Athletics Championships, the 17-year-old will be hungry to dominate the field once again and improve on his 68.94m personal best he set at these very Championships last year.

Charlize Goody
U18 Discus, Javelin and Shot Put

Discus dynamo Charlize Goody has started off her season with a bang, with the Commonwealth Youth Games representative already cementing in a World Under 20 Championships qualifier with a personal best of 49.03m. The epitome in versatility when it comes to throwing, Goody is putting the finishing touches on her preparation for the discus, javelin and shot put, looking to grab onto another gold after clinching the U17 javelin title last year. Charlize also placed second and fourth respectively in the U18 Javelin and Discus at the Australian Athletics Championships in April.

Rose Acklin
U16 400m and 800m

Rose Ackman is speed and endurance personified. A force in the 400m and 800m with personal bests of 55.16 and 2:11.31 respectively, she has so far undefeated at the last two All Schools and Australian Athletics Championships, and will be looking to add gold number five and six to her growing list of achievements.

Amaya Mearns
U16 100m, 200m and Long Jump

This year alone, Amaya Mearns has stepped on the podium to collect 13 gold medals, three silver and one bronze medal, and with World Under 20 Championships qualifiers for the 100m and 200m in tow, the St Paul’s School student is one to watch at these Championships. Competing over her two distances as well as the long jump, Mearns will be looking to add more qualifiers to ensure her spot on the team for Peru in August.

Sean Putra Susilo
U16 100m Hurdles, 200m Hurdles

A talented long and triple jumper, Sean Putra-Susilo will be focussing solely on his pet events – the hurdles – when he arrives in Perth in just a fortnight’s time. The U15 State Champion, and U16 100m Hurdles record holder in Queensland, Sean will be aiming to do his state proud and claim his first-ever national gold medal in both events.

Toby Stolberg
U18 High Jump

High jump extraordinaire Toby Stolberg brings both international experience and expertise to the U18 high jump. With a remarkable journey representing Australia at the World Under 20 Championships in Cali last year, the 17-year-old has since gone on to claim Commonwealth Youth Gold in Trinidad and Tobego, and will be looking to build towards her personal best of 1.82m in Perth.

Seth Kennedy
U16 200m and 400m

With a fresh PB of 21.54 set just last month at QSAC over 200m , speedster Seth Kennedy is a formidable contender for victory in the U16 200m and 400m. The Brisbane Grammar School student has three gold medals from three races at national events over the past year and is ready to add more accolades to his name.

Samuel Allen
U17 100m and 200m Ambulant (T37)

Samuel Allen is as tough as they come as a competitor. The sprint star has showcased sheer brilliance this year, taking out the sprint double at the 2023 Australian Athletics Championships and there is plenty more to come from this young gun on the eve of his first Australian All Schools Championships.

The 2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships, supported by WA Tourism, is a three-day event that sees Australia’s best school-aged athletes compete in team-based competition. Tickets can be purchased here.
