Welcome to the 2019 / 2020 Summer Season of Athletics

Published Mon 05 Aug 2019

The 2019/2020 Summer Calendar has been a collaborative operation between Athletics Australia (AA), Athletics New Zealand (ANZ) and Oceania Athletics Association (OAA).

It is likely that the Oceania Region will be awarded eight IAAF Area Permit meets outside of each countries Championships. To maximise the opportunities, Australia and New Zealand have recommended an allocation of IAAF Area Permits to the following events and locations, which are supported by Oceania Athletics Association, and gives our athletes the best possible competition program.

2019 / 2020 Australian Summer Season highlights:

  • The Australian Track & Field Championships will be held from Saturday 21st March to Sunday 29th March as Sydney celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
  • The Australian Combined Event Championships (All Age Groups, Opens and Juniors) will now have a dedicated weekend on Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th February 2020.
  • Zatopek 10 and the Women’s and Men’s 10,000 Australian Championships will move from the traditional Thursday evening to Saturday 14th December 2019 at Box Hill Athletics Centre while Lakeside Stadium is closed for re-surfacing from Oct 24th to Jan 10th.
  • Melbourne will also host the Women’s and Men’s 5,000m Championships as part of the Melbourne Track Classic program on Thursday 6th Feb 2020.

The IAAF has recommended two programs A and B to be alternated, between event locations (Australia and New Zealand). With the support of OAA, AA and ANZ have agreed on a number of event changes between programs A and B (which are now finalised) to provide maximise performance.

In addition to the Australian Track & Field Championships there will be five IAAF Permit Meets in Australia and three in New Zealand

  • Saturday 1st Feb Jandakot Airport Track Classic
  • Thursday 6th Feb Melbourne Track Classic
  • Thursday 13th Feb Canberra Track Classic
  • Saturday 15th Feb Hamilton (NZ)
  • Saturday 22nd Feb Sydney Track Classic
  • Sunday 23rd Feb Auckland (NZ)

Travel assistance to National Athlete Support Structure (NASS) athletes from Athletics Australia will be available for both Australian and New Zealand events.

The Para event grid will focus on three state-based event locations – Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney and will align to event group disciplines. AA High Performance are working through this strategy and will release a final para grid of events once consultation has concluded in the coming weeks. If, in the meantime, there are any questions then Jon Turnbull is available to answer these questions Jon.Turnbull@athletics.org.au

Athletics Australia would like to thank Athletics New Zealand and OAA for their commitment to this joint approach.
