Biography |
Kyle Cranston is an all-round sportsmen, who showed promise as a young athlete representing ACT at the Australian Little Athletics U13 and U15 Teams championships. Hailing from Goulburn, he started little athletics in the under-9s after his parents invited him to try it as he was very competitive at sport. He was also playing quite a few sports all at state level - rugby, cricket, soccer and basketball. Rugby was his main passion and he played it up until Year 11 but ended up missing out on making a Junior Brumbies after breaking his fibula. He started to concentrate on athletics in his late teens, resulting in a win at the 2011 national under-20 decathlon championships in an impressive score of 7189 points - to rank the sixth highest score in Australian junior history. A stint at a college in the US (in 2012) was followed by a period of inactivity (2012 through to 2013) before a surprise return in December 2013 when he scored a Commonwealth Games qualifier of 7394. Later in the season he placed third in the Commonwealth Games trials with another consistent score of 7390.
He made good progression in 2015, raising his PB to 7629 and placing eight at the World University Games. In 2016 he made improvement again to 7703 as he moved into the top-20 Australian all-time. Although he didn’t PB in 2017, he achieved his career highlight to-date – winning the world university Games title with a score of 7687. But there would be progression in February 2018 at the Australian Championships/CG trials where he placed a comfortable second in an 83-point PB score of 7786 – elevating him to 13th best ever Australian and selection in the team for the Commonwealth Games.
He has a degree in Exercise and Sports Science, Australian Catholic University at North Strathfield and his hobbies include golf. His father, Rod, was a leading Australian junior 400m/800m athlete.
