Biography

Kailyn Joseph started athletics in Primary School Year 5 aged 11. She was at a private school until Year 4 where there was limited opportunity for a para athlete to participate in sport. The next year she moved to St. Bernadette’s Catholic School where she was able to participate in swimming, cross-country and athletics. She was also able to go onto compete at the national championships in athletics. This introduction to athletics sparked an interest and this was enhanced when she found she had talent for the sport.

At 14, she was selected to compete at the World Para-Junior Athletics Championships in Switzerland. She
rates standing on the dais to collect her bronze medal and seeing the Australian flag raised as one of her most memorable moments. One year on, she will again represent Australia, on this occasion in a senior competition, the Commonwealth Games and again in the long jump.

Coached by Matthew Rawlings, a leading para coach in Sydney, Joseph has set a goal of achieving a PB in the long jump at the Gold Coast. After the Games her next target is the 2019 World Para-Athletic Championships and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

The year 10 student has many hobbies, including dancing, socialising, swimming, boogie boarding, surfing, snorkelling, the ocean, travelling and exploring, and trying out new things.
Before a competition she will always say a prayer, carefully plan the competition day. When in the competition she will always choose the number 2 or 7 for her runup marker.
