Biography |
An enormously talented junior sprinter, his progress was hindered by various hamstring injuries. In 2014 he progressed to the semi-finals of the 100 metres at the IAAF world junior championships in Oregon, USA. In the heat, he ran 10.36, the fastest ever time by an Australian at the world juniors.
In his first year in seniors, he capped his 2014/15 season winning the national senior 100m title in 10.19, the fastest time by an Australian for five years. He elected to bypass the 2015 IAAF world championships, where he was offered a roll down place by the IAAF, to build up for the pre-Olympic domestic season. In February in Canberra, he clocked an Olympic qualifier of 10.15, as he moved to number five in Australian history. He did not contest the 2016 National Championships/Olympic Trials with hamstring trouble. In the lead up to Rio, his below-par form led to him withdrawing from the team.
After a promising start to the summer of 2017 with runs of 10.22 and a 200m PB of 20.88, injury curtailed his season. Mid-year he opted to move to the AIS in Canberra where he was close to regular medical support and new coach Matt Beckenham after previously being coached by Commonwealth gold medallist Nancy Atterton.
He started the 2017/18 season in top form running a windy 10.23 in October. He raced on 11 occasions, significantly more than he had in previous years due to injury. His best was 10.26, his fifth fastest ever, but his consistency was a new level for him. Competing at his first Australian Championship for three years, he was solid through the heats, negotiating three races in two days and placing third in the final in 10.31. He was selected for the Commonwealth Games in the 100m and 4x100m and will make his long awaited senior international debut on the Gold Coast.
Joshua is interested in horse breeding.
