Biography
Otis Gowa represented Australia in the Oceania Championships in
both 2002 (4x100m relay - 2nd), 2004 (100m – 3rd and 4x100m – 2nd) and 2006
(100m – 3rd) in the 100m and 4x100m relay.
After tackling adversity and through hard work the highlight of his
career came in 2008 at the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre, when he became the Men’s
100m National Champion beating out heavy favourites Patrick Johnson and Matt Shirvington
with a time of 10.63 seconds. Earlier that meet, Gowa set his personal best in the 100m at
10.52 seconds. This gave him the confidence to compete with the best in the nation.
Gowa said he was inspired by Aboriginal athletes including Atlanta
Olympic 110m hurdles finalist Kyle Vander-Kuyp, former 100m champion Josh Ross and Sydney
Olympic 400m champion Cathy Freeman.
