Nicholas Hum

BIOGRAPHY

Nicholas Hum started athletics in his teens, in 2008. He joined Melbourne club, Glenhuntly, and came under the guidance of Olympic hurdler Max Binnington. Within a few year, he made his Australian debut at the 2011 World Para Athletics Championships placing fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.55m. He continued to represent Australia at the world championships in 2013 and 2015, again making the top-10 in the long jump on both occasions. 
Aiming for selection at his first Paralympics, he achieved his first 7 metres jump in a major competition, with 7.05m in March 2016. Selected for Rio, he placed fifth with a leap of 6.89m, just 10cm from the podium. 

Over the next few years he became a regular 7 metre jumper, registering his current Australian record of 7.39m and locking up another fifth at the World Para Athletics Championships in 2017.

Jumping below 7 metres during the Pandemic, six weeks before the Tokyo Paralympics he hit an excellent wind-assisted 7.21m. At the Games, he was boosted with the news his wife gave birth just days before he would compete, going on to win his first medal, bronze, with a distance of 7.12m.

Selected in his fifth world championships team in 2023, Nicholas Hum unfortunately pulled his hamstring in the final weeks leading into the championships and didn’t compete. 

He returned to the National team in May 2024, competing at the Para-Athletics World Championships where he placed fourth with a leap of 6.78m. He was selected for his third Paralympic Games in Paris heading away with a season’s best of 6.91m set at the Australian championships.
