BIOGRAPHY

Morgan Mitchell started Little Athletics when she was very young, but aged 12 put her athletics career on pause to pursue her passion for netball and basketball, which she played at a national level.

In her late teens, she represented Australia at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, where she progressed to the 400m semi-finals. Two years later in her senior international debut at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, she was again a semi-finalist in the 400m. She was a key member of the relay team which placed fourth in Glasgow, starting a resurgence of women’s 4x400m running in Australia.

In May 2015, she helped the Australian team qualify for the Rio Olympics by placing top-8 at the IAAF World Relays and helped the national team to another quick time at the 2015 IAAF World Championships.

In late 2015, she switched coaches from her childhood coach Peter Burke to 1976 Montreal Olympic 200m semi-finalist Peter Fitzgerald. She compiled a strong 2016 domestic season winning the Nationals and running a PB of 51.81 in February. This was brought down to an impressive 51.25 in June in Europe and was the fastest time by an Australian for 13 years. She has also elevated 12 places on the Australian All-Time List and now sits as our seventh fastest in history.

Selected for Rio, she ran well in the heat (51.30 for second), but faulted a little in the semi with 52.68 and fifth. She bounced back in the relay running flying legs of 50.97 and 50.52 in the heat and final as the team finished eighth in the Olympic final.

In 2017, she was a star of Nitro, competing in the mixed 2x300m and other events. She also made progress
in a her goal, of improving her speed, bringing her 200m PB down from 23.84 to 23.44 and placing fourth at Nationals. She had the day prior won her third national 400m title. At the 2017 IAAF World Relay, she guided the 4x400m relay team to fifth in the final. In April she travelled to the Bahamas to compete at the IAAF World Relays where she assisted the 4x400m relay team to be fifth in the final. In August she ran the 400m heats at the World Championships and also raced on the relay team that placed fifth in their heat.

After a challenging 2017, including a change of coach, she went undefeated in five races over 400m in the lead up to nationals. At the Australian Championships she placed third in a very competitive 400m and was selected in the 400m and 4x400m relay events for the Commonwealth Games.
