ATHLETE profile

Coach: Derek Yush
Event: Hammer Throw
Occupation: Student

Personal Bests
Hammer Throw: 63.15m   Lexington USA, 25 May 2017

Danielle started the sport aged five in Little Athletics as she wanted to be like her older brother, Chris, who had started doing athletics. She asked her parents to sign her up. Initially she did all events but at 13 picked up her first hammer, because Huw Peacock was doing it. She also combined discus for a few years and trained with Evan Peacock. By her mid-teens she was already throwing the hammer at a national level. At 17, she won her first of three-consecutive national junior (U20) titles and was selected to compete at the 2011 IAAF World Youth (U18) Championships where she missed qualification for the final by one place. The next year she was again selected for Australia, on this occasion to compete at the World Juniors. In the qualifying rounds, where 39 athletes lined up, she placed 13th with a throw of 58.94m, just under the PB, but unfortunately, she was again one place short of qualification for the final. In 2014 she headed to America to study a degree in Arts
at the University of Alabama. In her first year she qualified for the NCAA Championships. But it was in 2017 that the breakthrough came with three consecutive PBs of 61.24m, 61.33m and 63.15m. The last mark was also a Commonwealth Games B qualifier. She again qualified for the NCAAs, placing 16th. In early 2018 she travelled back to Australia for the national championships and CG trials. It was quite a weather difference, as the temperatures had got down to -12C in Alabama. In the competition unfortunately, she fouled three times in the qualifying round. However, the next week she was selected in the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games.

She is in her fourth year of a degree in Science (Human Environmental Sciences) at University of Alabama. A hobby is cooking and her hero is Dani Stevens. Her cousin is AFL player Gerrard Bennett. Immediately before she competes she eats a Cadbury chocolate. “I brought a supply to America with me so I could continue this.”
