Athletics Australia has published the Nomination Policy for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on 5-21 August 2016.
With the aim of nominating the most competitive athletics team to the Australian Olympic Committee to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero (BRA), the policy is aligned with the Athletics Australia Strategic Plan and the Australian Institute of Sport’s Winning Edge Program.
The new IAAF Qualification System entry process will make qualification for Rio 2016 tougher than for any recent Olympic Games. Therefore, Athletics Australia will nominate the maximum number of individual athletes and relay squads eligible within this policy, with the only caveat being that athletes show sufficient form and fitness to represent themselves and Australia to the best of their ability.
In those cases where more athletes qualify for an event than can compete under the IAAF Qualification System, the Athletics Australia Selectors will be guided by this policy and prioritise those athletes who are likely to be the most competitive, as determined in their sole and absolute discretion.
All athletes and coaches are strongly encouraged to download and read this document in full to ensure that they are aware of the complete nomination process for the Olympic Games.
If you have any questions about this document, please contact the Athletics Australia High Performance Department on (03) 8646 4550.
All athletes seeking nomination are expected to complete an online nomination form using the "Online Nomination Form" button below.
* On Friday 15 January 2016 an amended Nomination Criteria was published to reflect changes made to the qualification standards of some events, following a decision of the IAAF in November. In each case, the standard has been made easier. The standards are highlighted in red in Appendix 1.
